Filippino Lippi (Prato, circa 1457 – Florence, 1504)
Vashti Leaving the Royal Palace
Italy, circa 1475 tempera on panel, 46.5 × 40 cm
Florence, Museo Horne, inv. Horne 41
In tradition, the figure of Vashti has been used as a negative example of an arrogant and disobedient woman. Starting from the late 19th century, a feminist reinterpretation of her character emerged, portraying her as a model of dignity and self-respect. Vashti refuses to appear at Ahasuerus’ banquet and pays the consequences. However, the king’s request was unusual, as women of good reputation were generally barred from attending such events.
